Greetings friends and welcome to this week’s blog post. September has been mild and awesome. Fall is on the way and it’s always nice to see the changes in the foliage as the earth’s axis begins to tilt. Working with animals daily, weeding, planting, and watering flower beds are all a part of daily life in Timbavati Wildlife Park. These things are so obvious that sometimes we forget the infrastructure that supports our way of life. A lot of the structures that you see in Timbavati Wildlife Park are made from repurposed and reused materials.
For starters Timbavati Wildlife Park sits on the site of what was formerly known as Riverview Waterpark. Converting that to a wildlife park that offers family friendly entertainment and experiences has been a massive undertaking. Whenever it’s possible we work those existing features into our landscape. Evidence of this are the pastures outside of the Safari Train Ride.
While you’re waiting on Engine Number 9 to take you on a wild safari ride you can feed a few animals. This year there have been ostrich there with a pretty healthy appetite. Just a couple of years ago this was still a go kart track held over from the olden days. We removed the track but in the adjacent pasture to the ostrich we have a herd of aoudad. In the Aoudad Encounter which is exclusive to the Safari Train Ride, you will see that we left the go kart overpass as a shading area for the aoudad to hang out in. That’s repurposing at it’s finest.
Our reuse and repurpose goes beyond that. The pipes that have been used in the construction of our rhino encounter are all reused pipes and such from the old waterpark! Isn’t that rad? The benches you sit on when you’re in Timbavati Wildlife Park are mostly repurposed and reused wood. The timbers and steel under our rock entrance? All reused!
We’re also making great strides every year to improve and add new structures every year. Our Waterfalls Area is home to many small mammals and avians from North America. In 2020 animals like our North American badgers (Go Bucky) will be moving in to a new enclosure designed for them.
