Greetings friends and welcome to the end of 2018. Can you believe it? Another 365 days and 52 weeks are now in the books. 2018 saw a number of new features in Timbavati Wildlife Park. From our pasture with the aoudad in them to the new goat bridge in the interaction area there was no shortage of new and interesting things to see in them. One curious addition to the Waterfalls area was the bearded barbet.

Now honestly I wasn’t even really sure what a barbet was at first. LOL I just knew that the bird scared me a little bit (mind you I film in the cages ha ha ha). So barbets are a classification of birds and a bearded barbet is sub-classified as an African barbet. The bearded barbet is usually found in wooded areas near fig trees. An adult feeds on fruit while the young are reared on insects and fruit.

The bearded barbet is the second largest of the barbet species coming in under the black breasted barbet. The bearded barbet weighs a third to a quarter of a pound so it’s fairly light but its 10 to 12 inches tall which isn’t a small bird by any means. The barbet prefers to make a home in hollowed out trees. It will either clear a hole in a soft tree or seek to find a pre-existing one.

The bearded barbet tends to lay only two eggs in a clutch. Nesting duties are shared by both parents and the eggs will hatch within 13-16 days. The young fledge after about 30 days.
